Fluke Corporation has introduced its most advanced and capable distance measurement device, the Fluke 421D Laser Distance Meter.

New Fluke Ti32 Thermal Imager delivers 320x240 resolution

The Fluke Ti32 is the first imager in the market to incorporate a powerful 320x240 sens

or to provide strikingly crisp, detailed images. Using Fluke's patented IR-Fusion® technology, users can marry high-precision thermal images with visual (visible light) images in full screen, picture-in-picture or blended views for enhanced problem detection and analysis.

IR-Fusion is the only solution available with physical parallax correction, which enables perfect alignment, pixel by pixel, of both infrared and visible images. Fluke products are the only thermal imagers that incorporate IR-Fusion in both camera and software.

New Fluke milliamp clamp meters help process techs, electricians and auto mechanics save time and money

Fluke Digital Thermometer for Firefighter application (Case Study)

The City of Whitehorse Fire Department in the Northwest Territories of Canada holds three training sessions a week for their combined team of career and volunteer firefighters. Part of that training involves going into the “burn building” - a two-story fabrication structure specially made for practice fires. Trainees must enter the building, locate and extinguish the fire.

“The purpose of the burn building training is to get the firefighters experience in a safe environ¬ment, so they can respond with confidence on a real call,” says Warren Zakus, Training Officer for the Whitehorse Fire Department.

One of the ways Zakus makes sure the environment is safe is using a digital thermometer and thermocouple probes, strategically located within the burn building – on the ceiling and floor of each room, and in the interior stairwell. Using a Fluke 52-II Thermometer with five 80PK-1 beaded probe thermocouples, the firefighters now know the actual temperatures within the building ensuring the safety of the trainees, and also providing them with valuable information.

“Part of the purpose of using the digital thermom¬eter is to keep everyone safe. The other is to be able to truly educate the trainees on exactly how hot the environment will be as a fire passes though different stages,” says Zakus. “They can really feel what they will be facing in the field and they know how to react.” Zakus says the thermometer and probes also allow him to bet¬ter control the environment and ensure it is suitable to the level of experience of the group he is training at the time.

“We start the volunteers out at lower temperatures and easier tests than the kind of training we would do with a career veteran of the department.” Zakus chose the Fluke 52-II for several reasons. “When it came down to selecting a thermometer for our training sessions, I wanted one with dual displays so we can see two readings at a time and compare temperatures at the ceiling and floor during the same fire. I also wanted the data logging and recording for comparison between sessions. I found the Fluke 52 had all the features I needed,” he says. “And I already owned a couple of Fluke tools for my personal use, so I knew they were really high quality and would stand up to the environment.”

Despite having “melted lots of stuff in the past” in the burn building, Zakus says the Fluke probes have stood up to the test so far. “They get sooty sometimes, but they’ve never been damaged. I know they’re used in other fire-related industries too, like build¬ing materials testing for firewalls and fire doors.”

Non-contact temperature measurements using IR thermometers

Infrared (IR) thermometers allow non-contact measurement of surface temperatures by analyzing the invisible, infrared spectrum emitted from an object. IR measurement devices, like the Fluke 61and 65, make it safe to take surface temperature readings of items like rotating, hard-to-reach, electrically live, or dangerously hot targets. For preventative maintenance tasks, they cut measurement time to almost zero with the ability to take a surface temperature reading in less than one second.


IR thermometers can be used to conduct thousands of different types of measurements, including:

Electrical: IR thermometers can be used to troubleshoot problems with electrical connections and verify uninterruptible power supplies by locating hot spots in the output filters or dc battery connections. They can also be used to check components in battery banks, power panel terminations, ballasts, switch gears, circuit breaker and fuse connections that could be draining energy due to the heat created by loose connections or corrosion buildup.

Preventive maintenance: Using IR thermometers for preventive maintenance measurements of hard-to-reach equipment such as HVAC supply diffusers or dangerous equipment like motors, generators, and bearings helps identify potential problems.

HVAC: It’s estimated up to 30 percent of air conditioning leaks are due to faulty ducting, which can be quickly and easily detected with an IR thermometer.

Steam: IR thermometers are particularly useful in taking surface temperature measurements of uninsulated steam lines, steam valves, fittings, receiver tanks, and condensate return lines, which pose a large safety hazard due to the potential presence of live steam.
